Sporran/dirk Positions-then and now
Greetings! Probably going to stir up a hornet's nest here, and the question may have been asked before, but...Sporran position(s) pre-modern era. I notice that nearly all of us wear them front and center, regardless of our era, with dirks offset. I have also researched the position of the dirk in earlier eras, and it's forerunner, the ballock knife. Question to the historically tuned folk here...
Is front and center positioning of the sporran an evolutionary thing? I have worn mine (an oversized/17" long full badger number) offset right with a sword on my left, as well as center with and without a sword. I find the central position most convienent. It does not hinder me whilst running, though I am usually more concerned with whatever is chasing me...
I have also worn my dirk (the one I am pictured with when I am pictured-it has a 15" blade) front and center, as well as offset right with and without a sword. With my new belt setup, the position of the right is now my only choice. It is mounted to a pivoting frog that allows it to rotate horizontally for sitting and horseback riding. A work in progress dirk will have a scabbard that drops the dirk grip a little lower, and may allow positioning centrally. Are there any paintings from the 16-1700's that indicate a preference?
So...Is it like the cellphone holders of today-wherever you want to put'm, put'm?
Also, for the leather workers out there who find this query interesting...These folk make some dang good armor (I ran across some a few years back-stellar stuff), and it appears they have rigged something that will allow two things to happen at once...
