How to respond to a heated thread on XMTS:

That method should be used more often in life. A beer and a sandwich and some cooling off time usually rememdies about 95% of all nasty posts (or comments)

Great find CDN,
I must say that I am surprised at the number of threads that have needed "cooling off" of late, due to complaints.
IMO in most of the threads that have been "cornered", you'd practically NEED to be looking for something to take offense at.
Now I'm off to make a cheese & pickle sandwich. ;)

Perhaps we should all try and be a bit less sensitive and take things a bit less seriously. Intentional offence is rare, especially here. I try mostly to seek the funny side than to implode although on occasion I have let that resolve slip badly, sorry! When I do start frothing at the mouth it is generally due to a comment I've taken personally, oft times erroniously, sometimes not...
Problem with laughter is, it doesn't often carry well across the interweb, despite emoticons and hahahas in the text... if the other party in the debate has their serious head on, taking the mick will often inflame the situation. Also some folks are just itching for a fight no matter how light hearted you try to be.
I'm inclined to agree with, and have tried recently to adopt the most admirable "Alan H" philosophy that the world of Kilts isn't really worth getting in a muck-sweat about, loosing friends over, making enemies of an' generally upsetting the neighbours... an' all that jazz. Life's too short.
Haven't tried the "have a sandwich" approach yet... I doubt I'd get any posts out at all if I did, which would probably be for the better now I think about it...
Mmmmmmm, cheese and pickle? Perhaps this should read "Post Deleted."

I've done that very thing before. Always think carefully before posting. If it's not something you'd want your family (esp. mother/grandmother/children) reading, it's probably not worth posting.
Some of the posts/responses I've put up here took well over an hour to craft.

Once upon a time I received an email with which I took great offense. I drafted a really nasty response to it and had the thought to go to my principal and ask his opinion. His advice was to save the response as a draft, but send it tomorrow. Well, when tomorrow came, I wasn't nearly as hot-headed as I had been the day before and was able to respond in a calm, professional way. Lesson learned.

In my first few years as a member of this forum, I sometimes got a little hot about some of the things I read and replied. Of course this just made things worse and occasionally got me into a tiny bit of trouble with the mods.
Now, as I approach my 7th anniversary as a member, my practice is to pretty much ignore threads which might be in violations of our rules. If I see something that really gets to me,I might go as far as P'ming a mod and asking that they take a look at the thread.
There are three subjects which I will not argue with anyone, be it on here, or face to face, and all three are covered by our rules
