Who knew being kilted was hereditary?
My cousin sent me some old family photos, including a photo of my paternal grandfather kilted taken in 1920.

My grandfather died when I was very young and I have no idea what the occasion was. I know he was a chauffeur for a rich Philadelphia family so he traveled the world with them and their car in the late teens and early 1920's. It may have been taken in Edinburgh at the Parisian Photo Company. It appears they did "dress up" photos for tourists.
Still, it is kind of cool to know where I get my sartorial taste from!

Kilt looks a tad too long for him so probably posed at a studio.
But he certainly looks handsome and confident in it.

Cool! I love seeing 'new' old photos like this. I especially love paying attention to the details.
For example, I see that this kilt is not a typical Scottish tartan. The weft and warp have completely different setts. I wonder if this is something they did for 'dress-up' kilts, so they wouldn't be confused with real tartans? It's a pretty long kilt, too.
Love the windowpane tweed jacket and waistcoat!
I'm also really digging his shoes. These might have been his real shoes, and not part of the costume he put on for the photo. They have an old-world look to them, especially with the angle of the heels. I've looked at a lot of different modern shoes, and can't find any that have that look to them.

I love that jacket!
I noticed the warp and the weft are not the same as well. I would be interested to hear about the circumstances the surrounded the picture. Too bad Gramps isn't around to share the story. I bet that would be a fun one to hear.

Those are rather expensive shoes your grandfather is wearing... in all probability they are kangaroo and calf, with a stacked Cuban heel, which would have added a bit of height. Quite a photo, even if the kilt is "borrowed" for the occasion.

Whatever the venue, is still genetic - as it will be when our sons and grandsons take over our kilt collections.

Cool old photo. He certainly looks right at home in the kilt, although I'd wager it might have been his first time wearing one. Now, all we need to see is a photo of you in a similar pose to compare, besides that would be a cool keepsake to hand down to your kids!
