    What's this pouch?

Brian et al - from a portrait of Gregor Macgregor of Glengyle.

Any thoughts on what the pouch to the left of the sporran is? It appears to have gold embroidering and a top flap. Some sort of document pouch perhaps? I've never seen anything like it and cannot think of a practical application for standard Highland Dress so guess it's symbolic or representative, possible of some office?

Can we see the whole image? To me it looks like it's a brocade pocket flap.

    I don't think so.

I'm stumped. In shape and size it resembles either a haversack or "messenger's" style satchel- so documents could be a possibility, although both of those are usually slung over the shoulder on a strap (or later attached to a ruck in the case of the haversack).

This looks like an 18th Century document wallet attached to or tucked behind the sporran strap. The deeds of the Glengyle house and lands perhaps?
