New Kilt(s) Day

On the advice of the gentleman running A Year In A Kilt, I purchased two kilts from his favorite retailer (Not sure if I can name them here) during their "Tartan Day" say. Scottish National and Heritage of Ireland. You'd think with all the Smiths in the world, that Smith tartans would be more popular than they are, but being as they weren't, these were my next choices.

So, they arrived in the mail today, and I dragged my daughter outside to get a couple of pics of me wearing them, straight out of the shipping bag.

16 oz., 8 yard PV kilts. My other kilts are two Stillwater Thriftys. And they don't even come close to these two.

Love them! And I think they look nice with my Aussie Oilskin, too.


That sporran looks pretty good with both of them, but I popped on a different sporran for the Heritage of Ireland.



Even the horses noticed I was wearing a kilt. (Really, they noticed it was time to put some grain out).


Heritage of Ireland. I like this tartan better than the Irish National or the St. Pats. The way it's woven, the orange appears much more "rusty."


I have to say, I'll never buy another 5 yard kilt again if I can help it. This one, in a pretty stiff wind, held it's own, with the weather we've had here recently in the midwest.

I've got plans to order 4 or so more before my birthday in August, and then I'll be doing a Year in a Kilt myself.

Very cool! Any plans to chronicle your year on a blog or Facebook page?

I doubt it, beyond my personal or art Facebook pages. I already wear a kilt when I play in the band I am in, and there's really not been any hullabaloo that would be word-worthy in that regard.

However, I'll have to say I will be wearin pants in two specific instances. One, when coaching ice hockey during practices, and two, when riding my motorcycle. In both instances, safety first.

Thanks for the kind words on my kilts and my sporrans. I made them myself. Sometimes it's handy being able to work with leather. ;)

The boots are Ariat lacers with Justin suede half chaps. I normally wear very tall kilt hose over top of the half chaps.

First, your daughter takes very good pictures. Congratulations to her. You look good in all of them. I like both of your kilts very much. Those are two of my favorite tartans, but I don't have kilt in either of them. My bad.

I like your denim jacket. It looks good with both kilts, especially in that ranch-like setting. And who can argue with that shirt?

The only suggestion I have, and it is purely a personal one, is that either your photographer should kneel down in order to give viewers a better idea where the edge of the kilt hits your knee, or wear your kilt a bit higher - maybe an inch, so that the kilt edge hits somewhere between about an inch above your knee to no more than mid knee. Or do both.

Thanks for the feedback. I like my kilts hitting me mid-knee, which is where these hit me. I agree, though, it's a bit hard to tell.

Welcome to XMarks. Nice kilts, boots and sporrans. Just a point, though. 16 oz PV doesn't exist. I don't know what your kilts are made of, but it ain't 16 oz PV. Oh, and you can name the vendor if you want to.
