Finished my X-Kilt!

Over the weekend I started and finished my (first) X-Kilt. I made it of cotton canvas. Luckily, my rump measurement is the same as the master of the X-kilt's. Fun project.

I note that it really is important to have someone help you with your measurements...especially the length ones. Mine came out too long because, I assume, I measured wrong by bending over to measure... You get the picture.

Let me tell you shortening the hem and redoing it can be done. But it is tedious. Originally the hem ended up below my kneecap. Had to take off 2 1/2 inches.

How I did this, for future screw-ups? I got the right measurement. Marked the hem with chalk. Then painted the chalk marks with a line of fray check. Then cut off the extra.

Picked out about 1 1/2 inches of stitches on each pleat and side hem. Tedious.

Ran a straight stitch, then a zig zag stitch along the new raw edge. Folded up 1/2 inch, pressed, and re hemmed.

Then fixed the hems on the sides of the aprons, and rehemmed the bottom of the kilt.

Regarding length, here's a way to handle it solo (I think Rocky has posted this, but I could easily be wrong -- anyway, it's not mine originally, just passing it along!).

Look in a mirror and hold a bathtowel up where the kilt would be. Fold the top edge until the towel is the length you want, from where you measured waist to where you want the bottom edge to be. Then lay the towel flat on bed/table and measure that length.
