Button on jacket ??????
Hi can anyone tell me what this internal button is used for. is it just to close the jacket

It's difficult to tell exactly what I'm looking at in that photo, but my first guess that it's a typical chain button. These are used on formal styles of jackets to "close" the jacket without really buttoning it completely closed. There should be a corresponding buttonhole on the other side where that hanging button would go through. The end result would look something like the photo below (it's a different style of jacket, but the same concept for closure).
Chain buttons are not just for Highland style jackets. My vintage 1960s US Air Force mess jackets (they were my late grandfather's and work perfectly with a kilt) have them too.

Thank thats what it will be , just could not think why put another solid silver button on
