    Scottish TV Series, "Still Game"

    Greetings,

I just discovered the Scottish TV Series called "Still Game". I could not stop watching it, as it is certainly not for everybody, but without a doubt one of the funniest TV Series that I ever viewed. The series is basically about two older Scottish gentlemen living in a Retirement Community in Glasgow, Scotland. Many different supporting characters and can get a little racy and certainly not a family show. However I was wondering how popular was this show in Scotland? It seems like it was on for over 8 seasons, so must have been somewhat popular. For those in the US who would like to see this, use your caption text option, as they truly talk Scottish. I was fortunate that my Grandfather talked similar to those on the show, so I could understand most of them, but eventfully I went to caption too.

It currently is on Netflix in US....CHEERS...

I've watched this series through a few times and find it funny and endearing, as despite the often brutal banter, the characters take care of each other in the end.

It's a spinoff of characters that first appeared on the sketch comedy show "Chewin' the Fat," which also featured Greg Hemphill, Ford Kiernan, Paul Riley, etc.

There were also a couple of stage shows, which you can watch on YouTube.

    Enjoy!

Massively popular in Scotland . It's not set in a retirement community, though I can see why you might think so . Large sections of working class areas of Glasgow were flattened in the 60's. The former occupants were moved into newly-built high-rise apartment blocks, known as multis, a kind of social housing. Many have been there ever since, like the characters in the show. It's well-loved because they are universally recognisable to most Scots - urban, working class baby boomers now in their twilight years but who were once full of fun and mischief. The people who travelled to watch the Lisbon Lions and were in the Tartan Army pitch invasions at Wembley in the 70's. In short, the parents and grandparents of most of the shows audience . Almost everyone in the show is a widow or widower who's kids have moved away for education and work and the show has a lot of heart - it celebrates how friendship and the acerbic humour of urban Scotland can overcome loneliness and grief. Most of all though it's just very funny - I'm glad to hear the humour travels!

    Regards, EEM.

I heard about this when someone over in the Kilts & Culture group mentioned that Season 9 had come to Netflix. It took me awhile to get into it (as it is with most shows, it seems), but I'm now on Season 7 and loving it. My significant other is less interested, so I get to it anytime I'm Netflixing alone.

I appreciate the insight into Scottish social life - just about as far from the historical romance that is Outlander as you can get.

That makes two of us. Now if the characters spent a lot of time afield fishing ...

Ah yes, that’s the reason why I have never heard of it! It’s obvious really when one thinks about it.
