The Kilted Cuban
Saturday night we had a reception for my sister in law and her new cuban husband, Yuki. (He arrived here legally via paperwork and schmoozing with congressmen, rather than 90 mile raft trip.)
Anyhow, we bought a McQuarrie tartan kilt from Matt about a month ago, he tried it on, and he said it fit fine. (Mind you I was on the other side of the city when he told me this) I set him up with a sporran and a McQuarrie kilt pin that we picked up in Scotland last October (I didn't need it, and I'm not sure what LeighAnne was going to use it for) and some extra garters for his hose.
I felt I had explained everything to him and that he should be fine. He had been researching kilts on the net and had been asking me about flashes, belts etc. When I arrived at the reception in my Menzies hunting tartan I realized that I had made one major mistake: I had never actually asked him to try it on in front of me. Yuki walks up to me and I couldn't believe that he had the pleats facing forward. I couldn't have been more embarrased (for myself, not him)...
We remedied the situation post haste, and he was amazed at how much more comfortable the kilt was. Yeah, you think? He did have the kilt pin placed correctly on his body (right side of the kilt just above the knee, but on the pleats)...
It was a terrific time at the reception, everyone loves that I've (admittedly my bride's influence) brought the kilt back to the McQuarrie clan of Seattle, and that Yuki is so happy to grab up the heritage of the family he married into. I'll post pictures as soon as I get a hold of them.
Just in case anyone is wondering, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who noticed the backwards kilt, or even that it had been fixed.

Kilt pin on the pleats, I just might have to try that LOL
Glad that you saw to it that he ended up wearing the kilt correctly George, and glad that another kilted gent is comfortable!

I'm glad to see he is enjoying the kilt!
Don't be too hard on him about getting it on backwards. You'd be amazed at how often that happens. At least once at every highland games, I see someone wearing their kilt backwards. You'd think standing around all those other kilted men with the pleats in the back would clue them in as to how it should be worn, but I guess some people just are not all that observant.... :-)

I was setting up my booth at the MN Scottish Fair last year, and a woman walks by with her two young boys, proudly wearing their tiny kilts backward. I motioned for her to approach and discreetly told her that the pleats go in back. She said in an exasperated tone that she knew that, but the kids insisted on having the pleats in front so they could look at them, and she had given up trying to correct them!
Honestly, most of the public would never know the difference.

Maybe we could suggest they take turns walking in front of one another so they can see pleats. Or just look at all the pipe bands!

I assure all that I was very discreet about fixing the situation. He's quite happy with the kilt and is looking forward to wearing it as often as he feels there is opportunity.
Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing the reaction of his friends back in Havannah, as is he.
