History of Prince of Wales Tartan

I'm wondering if anyone knows the history of the Prince of Wales tartan. I tried searching the forums but all I could find out was that the tartan was designed in the 60's.

I rather like it and have seen a kilt in that tartan from a vendor I've used before.

According to Zaczek's "World Tartans", the Prince of Wales tartan was produced in 1998 by Locharron.

I think he'd say get a black one! Personally I think the bow tie is over the top too but the vendor tried to show all of the available items in that tartan at once. The only thing missing are the flashes but they sell 2 variations (pointed & purled) and I think that would have required a model to display and models are expensive.

actually its quite a nice Tartan, I sometimes play in a pipe band that wears Black Stuart (which is similar) and they have nice Kilts made at the House of Edgar,

LOL but I have found a site that makes custom dog/cat collars, dog harnesses, leashes & doggie coats in your choice of tartans!

This tartan actually has its origins in the Duke of Rothesay tartan, first seen in a kilt dating from the 1840s. The Duke of Rothesay hunting tartan was made by simply reversing the red and green -- we know this variation existed at least by the 1940s.

ITI notes on the Price of Wales tartan indicate that this was originally supposed to be the Duke of Rothesay hunting tartan, but a mistake was made in the white pivot, and the resulting new tartan was called "Prince of Wales."

Weaving errors are responsible for more "new" tartans than most people know!

What other tartans are the result of weaving errors?

I very much like the stateliness of the Prince of Wales tartan.
