Hello
Hello Everybody,
I've been reading the forum here for a few months and finally decided to jump in. My interest in my Irish roots, beyond just family talk, came from my Dad taking my sister and me to a Clancy Brothers concert for my 16th birthday. Been hooked ever since, although its sort of just brewed in the background (you can't always find others who like it, especially at that age).
I went to my first Highland Games a few years ago, and really took a shine to the kilt. This past summer, I decided to take the plunge and buy one. It arrived around Christmas time and since then I've been trying to finish getting all the pieces and finish my education on proper wear, etc.
The forum here has been a wealth of information. I'm glad to be aboard
Mike

Welcome!! ...and don't let "proper" limit you; as we say here on XMarks, "Kilts are not a costume."

Thanks. I've followed the "proper" arguments here and in other discussion groups. I've alway been pretty conservative and a traditionalist, so it takes quite a bit of prodding to go against the norm for me. I most likely would never have bought a kilt to begin with if I hadn't discovered that a) the Irish did wear kilts, and that b) I found a tartan for our family. This gave me enough justification to give it a try.
My first public (sort of) appearance will be at a St. Patrick's Day party I'm hosting, and then I'll wear it again at the Highland Games. How many other times it will come out I'm not sure yet. We'll have to see where it takes me.

I always considered myself to be Irish, My Father's family all immigrated from Nothern Ireland in the 1920s. Then, while trying to find information on the family, I was talking to the people at the Irish American society. They looked up my surname in their book and came back with, "Oh, but your family are really Scotts." You never know.

Welcome! I have also just found out that I have Irish roots on one side of my family. A great, great, great grandmother. Have not identified wher in Ireland yet.
Once you wear the kilt the first time, you will be hooked and will want to wear it all the time.
The kilt concealed a blaster strapped to his thigh. Lazarus Long
