    Hume Castle

There has been a castle on this site since the 13th century, and was once a stronghold of the Hume family.

What we see today has the appearance of a French Napoleonic Castle rather than the traditional Scottish castle we might expect to find.

This is because the original castle which stood on this rocky outcrop was mostly demolished by Cromwell's English Army in 1651.

But let us go up and take a closer look for ourselves.

The walls we see today were constructed by the Earl of Marchmont between 1770 and 1789 along the original castle's boundaries, but inside there are still some remains of the original castle.

Here I am within the castle walls.
