So, I've always been intrigued by this tartan. It's basically just the Northumberland/Shepherd tartan plus a couple extra lines. I'm one of the few that likes the Northumberland tartan, and found a lot of my maternal ancestory is from there. But, I really like the Burns Check too. What I'm wondering is if anyone has any pictures of a kilt made from this tartan? I've googled around and never been able to produce anything. I know Hamish has a Northumberland kilt. I think it's fantastic. But, any Burns Check kilt pictures??

I made a box pleated kilt from this tartan last year for a gentleman named Burns. I used Lochcarron's 16 oz cloth. I really like the tartan, though my wife was not fond of it. Here are some pics I took of the kilt before shipping it off.



The gent who ordered it bought a bunch of accessories that would emphasize the black and white of the tartan -- a black balmoral with black & white dicing, black and charcoal grey hose, with black or white flashes, etc. I think were I to wear this kilt I'd emphasize the green and brown in the tartan. I'd wear a green shirt (as I am in the model pics above) with brown Lewis hose and green garters.

That is stunning, Matt. You should send a picture of that kilt to the Burns Association of North America and the World Burns Federation. It has a certain...wait for it...panache to it!

I can't ever remember seeing a kilt in Burns check in the latter's newsletter, but that one is "the bee's knees"!

Man, when I first saw this picture loading up I actually felt a little jump in the heart! (no exageration) I knew the tartan had a "Panache" to it also ;) And, I just KNEW it would make a great kilt. I should have known if anyone had a kilt in this tartan it would be Matt.

Thanks so much Matt. I absolutely agree with you on the accessories selection. My thoughts, even when I'd only seen the tartan swatch, were to emphasize the brown and green in the tartan. Matt, you've just helped me spend part of that rebate coming this Spring. We'll be talking.

Interesting Brad, in the photo of Matt's kilt, the Burns is woven much larger that the typical Northumberland weave.

Indeed it is. I've noticed this to be true to most of the Lochcarron 16 oz. strome. The sett on my Henderson weathered is very large as well (also Lochcarron Strome range.)

I know right? I went to the Lochcarron page after I posted this, and saw the Northumberland is indeed the "normal" size for that tartan. None-the-less, I rather like the sett enlarged a bit like in the Burns tartan. Actually, were I to get the Northumberland tartan, I wouldn't mind it being the same set size as this Burns check. But, I don't know that I'd want to pay the premium for a custom weave! lol. Ya gotta weigh the priorities I suppose.
