No New York State tartan, either!
There's a New York City tartan, even a Cherry Valley, NY, tartan, but no design for the entire state. Here's an opportunity for you tartan designers out there (I'm no good at it)...!

I agree Brian. I'd love a NY state tartan kilt.

What are the colors of malfeasance?
Seriously, New York has a long and honorable history. Orange for the early Dutch influence, and something to honor the Six Nations would be quite appropriate. A strong German presence in its early history too.

Interesting ideas. I was thinking more of the geographic characteristics: the Adirondacks and Catskills, the Finger Lakes and the Champlain/Lake George corridor, perhaps a gray line for the great cities....

Very nice! I like that idea. Thank you for knocking me away from the history aspect.

I certainly like the history aspect of anything! With NY, there's just so much: the Iroquois Confederacy, all of the various European immigrant groups, the colonial wars, the Erie Canal, the Irish street gangs, the Mafia Five Families ....
It's easier to go with the geography!

I'm typing this quickly before ducking out the door for work (so no links):
There's the New York City, NYPD, NYFD, NY State Troopers, and Western New York (aka Buffalo) tartans.
We definitely could use one for the entire state though. But that's a project for someone else - as a transplant, my first state tartan will be Pennsylvania.
