Wedding in Germany
Just after a little information... I know there are links with Scotland & Germany, but has anyone attended a wedding kilted there? I'm visiting from the UK to my pen-friend's wedding and whilst he and his lovely bride would have no problems with it, what would the likely response be from the other guests? Yep, I know it's no-one elses' concern, but there are only to be about 40 guests and I wondered what the general attitude might be!

I did , but it was on a Military Base, although the reception was at a Castle. My kilt was well received even by the Germans.

The general reaction? Well, as I recall from my history reading, in WWI, the Germans thought the Highland regiments were hilarious. In WWII, they saw the Highlanders roll up on (I think) Gold Beach, and almost imediately surrendered. So either you'll be laughed at or surrendered to.
(I'm just joking here- I have a few German pen pals who think it's awesome that I wear the kilt.)

I, too, will be attending a wedding in Germany and will be wearing my kilt. The Wedding is in September and we may be going to Oktoberfest in the same trip. I am going to be kilted as much as possible.

Phil, don't forget the wedding is the bride's day to shine. Make sure she is fine with you wearing your kilt before you show up. All eyes should be on the bride, not your kilt. If she says go for it then by all means......

Links with Scotland and Germany? How's that? I'm interested, do you mean by your family heritage or an actual genetic connection?
I say go wear it, no one is stopping you from wearing it.

Drop Xmarks member A_Hay! a PM with your question, as he is a kilt-wearer in Germany. I'm sure he'll be glad to give you his insights.

I've never had a problem wearing a kilt over here out among the Germans.
It often leads to very interesting conversations.
Still, as others have pointed out, it is the Bride's Day, and her wishes should be respected IMHO.
I have a kilt that Rocky at USA Kilts designed that he calls German Heritage. It incoporates the gold, black, and red of the German Flag. I think there is a picture on his Gallery. I really like the colors.
On 2, 3 and 4 May there will be Highland Games in Peine, Germany, just south of Hannover. I'm planning on being there. Hope some other X-Markers can make it.

I’m a Dane, not a German and I have never been wearing a kilt to a wedding.
However, were I English, and had I just the slightest drop of Scottish blood, I – with my knowledge of Germans - think that it should be fully acceptable to show up in a kilt and the appropriate accessories meeting the standard of the other participants, those being more conventionally dressed.
But, of course, you should as the first thing obtain the understanding and approval of the bride and groom.

I always found, from my time in Germany, that the Germans are very open. I don't forsee a problem at ALL. Germany--what a beautiful place. Enjoy.
