Where to purchase Ghillie Brogues
I'd appreciate recommendations on a good source for the purchase of Ghillie Brogues. Prefer a source in the U.S. in case I don't get the size right on the first order, so I'm not trying to exchange/return the pair overseas. I'm less concerned about price than getting good quality and a comfortable fit for walking. Thanks in advance for your advice.

I got mine at the Tartans Museum in Franklin, NC.
They're not the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. This summer I bought a pair of brown "walking shoes" at Wal-Mart that, imho, look good with casual wear and make my feet feel a lot better at the end of the day. But you didn't ask about that.

Look up to the top left sponsor of this site. Rocky has Gillies under kilt accessories on his website. You can also call him for size advise.
And as mentioned Matt at the Scottish Tartans Museum.

Frugal Corner has ghillies -- leather upper, rubber sole -- for 68 bones.
Call in advance to make sure they have them in stock in your size.

Mine came from Sport Kilt. They're fine. $84.50. Have rubber soles. Their service is excellent, everything mailed Priority mail. I had to make an exchange to get the next size smaller. No problem.

My first pair of ghillie brogues (which I've now had for about 35 years) took a lot of breaking in... my second pair, which I got from Gaelic Themes, have rubber soles, are made from a softer leather, and have a nicely padded inner sole. Needless to say they were more comfortable from the get go. The only downside is that they do not take polish very well and I have found them impossible to bring up to a really glossy shine.
My suggestion would be to buy a pair of the rubber soled variety for wearing to games, etc. from one of our local sponsors, then get a pair of buckle & strap shoes for evening wear.

Regarding J. Higgins' ghillie brogues....
I purchased a pair from them about five years ago. They're reasonably priced when compared to others, but there is a drawback.
They're constructed from Corfam (or similar product) which is a synthetic leather.
That means two things:
1) they don't scuff easily, so less polishing.
2) because they're synthetic, they'll never 'break-in' as leather does.
After over two years wear mine were as stiff as the day they arrived. Someone brought to my attention their Corfam construction and its drawbacks.
Perhaps by now J. Higgins is retailing leather brogues.
Slainte yall,
steve

Try The Scotland Yard in Kentucky - www.scotyard.com
I have the rubber sole variety, have marched L O N G parades very comfortably, and after 5 years, they still look as good as new!
Very good service from the Scotland Yard folks, as well!

What size are you looking for? I have a pair of UK 7 large worn twice. They fit like a US 9. I would sell for $35 plus shipping.
