Which Sporran with Prince Charlie?
Sorta kinda...been trying to search but need two words and get jumbles.
Here's the deal. I finally sprang for a Prince Charlie & waist coat. Because of my "unique" size its being made-to-measure by Lochcarron.
Today I realized the only sporrans I have are leather....well other than the buffalo fur sporran which isn't fancy.
Do I now have an excuse to design my own sporran at L&M Highland to go with the PC when it arrives? Or are my Freelander's fancy enough?
Guess my question is, "How much furry stuff is needed, if any, to pass the test of being formal enough for a PC?"
Which in itself is a hoot here in the canyonlands...but who knows....I could travel somewhere...
Thanks for any direction to old threads or flat out suggestions.
Thanks

Ron,
That depends on how much, er, coin you are willing to part with. For you I would think a full face coyote sporran would work like gangbusters, but the ones I've seen are not exactly, in-expensive. A man of your stature would probably require a sporran sized to the appropriate dementions, not the standard. Since that's the case, the world is your oyster, damn the expense and go for something really cool! And Fuzzy! ith:
As to where you could wear it, what about the Santa Fe Opera this summer?
I will soon be a member of the X-kilt clan, just bought one from Fudgeman, the jonesing begins....

I know this one! I know this one!
Only the silver cantle fur sporran with the Prince Charlie; though, horse hair counts too. My source for that is, of course, MacMillan of Rathdown. That means you can't go wrong with that kind of sporran paired with the PC.

No furry is needed but it definitely is vogue in Highland fashion to wear fur--- especially those of aquatic mammals such as seals and otters. I do find fur and white metal--- I would not mind a nice solid silver cantle but have not gotten around to having one commissioned (not that I probably will in the near future)--- "the thing" for more formal evening wear. Most "formal events" are, however, becoming less and less formal and technically few would ever call for a PC, yet the PC is still extremely popular and is more often than not worn as-if it was really a black Argyll with waistcoat. For these formal but not quite events I also like patent leather (as the pattern that was of the Irish regiments), metal and leather hunting type sporrans and so-called "half-dress" leather and fur sporrans depending upon the time of day and mood. If its a Highland event in North America and everyone is dressed in PCs or doublets then it really should probably wear a metal and fur sporran--- or a full mask if one wants to get attention--- but outside of that sub-culture to anything short of "black tie only" the issue of metal and furry is really "dress up" or "tone down"... Look at what the women are wearing.. Mink evening bags? Sequents? Patent leather? Big leather bags?

I would say take a look through the Formal Pics thread for an idea of what sporran can work for a PC outfit. My first Dress Sporran was an all leather model with a Chrome cantle, since then I've been lucky enough to get myself a sealskin L&M Dress Sporran. As you are in the U.S. I know you can not easily get a sealskin sporran, however there are alternatives to sealskin. I love my Freelander, but I'd never consider wearing it with a PC.

Ron - I wear a Fergusson Britt skunk From the Scottish Tartan Museum with my PC. I think it's formal enough while being able to be used for semi-formal occasions. Best of both worlds.

Thanks guys,
Ted sounds right on. For personal reasons have an aversion to some furs including skunk, coyote, badger, seal, especially with the dead head on...do love my hair on buffalo.
Guess its time for another look at the L&M design your own sporran website.
Still, so weird..."formal" around here is reasonably new jeans, maybe ironed, your best boots shined, a white dressy shirt - preferrably with western styling, and a western style sport coat and bola tie or elegant beads...
Hmmm, turquoise beads over the waistcoat with an inlaid turquoise cantle and turquoise handled sgian dubh....hmmmm....
And did wanna look at the formal pics thread but on my dial up it takes eons for the high pixel pics then there comes a time where I just get the red X's then have go to to each red X and click "show picture" and wait some more.
But thanks guys.

Ron,
I agree with Brian that a full-mask sporran might be the best look for you. However, given your aforementioned "aversion to some furs... especially with the dead head on" I'll follow Ted's lead by suggesting goat hair as another possibility:

I understand, sadly, that just doesn't fit with my personal or spiritual beliefs....some fur, okay, the head - no way. Sorry. Just me.
Imagine it may also go back to some childhood trauma from when my father gave my mother some fox stoles with the heads on and my grandfather Murdoch told me it was my pet cat. I bought it, was back before we knew I needed eyeglasses....

That would look awesome!
Dangit Ron!
Now I'm not going to be able to concentrate on work at all today. Instead I'll be thinking of how sweet that inlaid cantle would be and how to pull off a turquoise handled sgian....
Thanks. This is more fun than work anyway.
