Help Josh make a kilt Part1

    OK you guys-
So I got to the part about measuring. It says to make 3 different spit options, so I did.

    Waist: 42 (Split#1)A:21,P:21 (Split#2)A:22,P:20 (Split#3)A:22.5,P:19.5

    Hips: 46 (Split#1)A:23,P:23 (Split#2)A:22,P:24 (Split#3)A:21.5,P:24.5

I did the following formula-Split#1 equal half, split#2 1 inch difference, split #3 1.5 inch difference

My first question is how should I ACTUALLY determine how much measurement should go into spit options.

My second question is how do I determine which is the best one?

I understand that the waist apron measurement should be bigger than the pleats (Unless the individuals waist is bigger than the hip..right?)

Also, the hip apron measurement should be LESS than the pleat measurement (Right?)

Thanks for the initial help-Just getting started on this, so I'm sure there will be many more parts.

Just a note for Dr.Tewksbury if you're reading this-PLEASE consider a companion video CD as a supplement. I have a feeling if I could see you demonstrating, it would be soooo much easier.

I believe you're correct. I might go with split #2 to keep even numbers. Not sure it matters - its been quite a while since I read Dr. T's book.

I'd go with option 2 on the waist and option 1 on the hips.

There is not a wrong answer as long as it meets all the criteria set out by Barb T. It's just that some splits fit better than others depending on body types.

I'd go with Split #2, unless you have a really big belly or a really "arched" back, in which case I'd go with Split 3. Don't do even splits.

Again, don't go with even splits. If you have a "bubble butt" go with split 3, but otherwise I would stick with 2 again. If you did 3, then your apraon would be narrower in the hips than the waist-can't do that. In fact, if you can tweak things a little (i.e. do a waist split of 21.5 and 20.5 and a hip split of 22.5 and 23.5, so that you do have some A-shaping for the apron)

The whole point here is to have an apron that flares out as it goes down, and pleats that hug the small of your back and then round over your rear.
If the apron flares too much, it's really hard to get it to shape properly, but if it doesn't flare at all it looks like a Utilikilt (which is fine if it is a Utilikilt, but this isn't).

    I hope this helps.

    Be well,

    Be well,
Typically, men have a belly and the back side is not that prominent.

Men with a waist larger than 38" I would recommend equal splits for the apron hip (Ah) and pleating in the hips (Ph).

    Good luck,

Unless you have a very muscular/athletic backside; in that case, you may want to have some added taper in the pleats as The F-H.C.A.G. suggests. Ask your wife for a sanity check? Measure a kilt that fits you well!

If there's a prominent overhang in front, you can allow for that with the hip split---imagine that the apron hangs straight down from the waist. I'm guessing your figure is middle of the road, from photos.

When in doubt, read the book and do what Wally/the experienced kilt makers said. I suspected that if you march or work out a bit, you may have some muscle mass in back.
