    kilt brings the beaver

hey ive got a chance to pick up a beaver fur coat thats been treated and in great condition for a good price. anyone think that this could be made into sporrans and if so any advice on how? or if anyone thinks they would be better at it and is interested i could see how much it would be to ship it.

I would have to look at the lining of the coat and what they did to the original pelt to make it a coat. It is most likely possible, however.

I know that old seal coats have been made into sporrans, so I would think that beaver would be a suitable choice also. It all depends on how the hides were sewn together to make the coat, but you should be able to find many suitable pieces to use.

If you end up "parting it out," the way Kevin Kinney did with a seal coat, I would be very interesting in purchasing a piece.

well the person who is selling it is the daughter of a furrier i think it is silk lined but a seamripper could end that shortly... would i make a leather sporran and then sow the fur on to the front with a hidden seam and then add the metal cantle? also since it is brown how much call is there for day wear formal? and if i buy it id be glad to part it out

about what size portion is everyone interested in? its a good size coat not floor length but good size. i know a full beaver pelt is around 30 inches diameter and around 100 to 145, but given that im getting a whole coat and selling mainly to recoup losses that size i dont think id charge more than 75-80 for. if im out of touch with the market let me know. im thinking for a sporran one needs about a 1 ft square which will obviously less than a full size but let me know what you need
