Another step in my kilted life
I guess, what I have to say to you is nothing special for most of you. But in my case it is. When I started my kilted life (not fulltime yet), I decided to go in evolution mode and not in revolution mode; meaning, go step by step, not to frighten my closest and dearest.
First my new "fashion style" was presented to my wife and kids; I can't say my wife was happy about it. My sister-in-law and my wife’s parents were next. My sister, here family and our family friends... OK, some neighbors have seen me couple of times kilted with no comments or positive reaction only.
My parents were the hardest case for me at least. We don't see each other every day and I had filling it could be a big challenge for them accept this is nothing special (is it??). So last Saturday they were visiting us and I deliberately strapped on my new kilt. The truth is, they've heard some roamers but it was first time for them to see me kilted. There were some comments, like "what are you doing in this skirt'" but only for a minute or two. After that, no comments at all.
After all, kilted or in pants, it's still me!

How do we really know it's still you?
Glad it went well.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Sounds like it went well. Congratulations.

I understand what you are going through. My family is completely against me wearing a kilt. And I am still waiting for my first! I suspect that as you wear the kilt around them more regularly, the will become accustomed to it. But it sounds like the first time went pretty well. Best of luck.

It still is you as you said. It does take time for people to get used to different things, and you are doing it right.

I have had some similar reactions... My folks just laughed a bit then basically told me I needed to lose a few pounds so it would fit right. The girlfriend on the other hand is a different story. She calls me out on it whenever we are on the phone (especially if she is around her friends) so they all think I am a bit odd... Not exactly the impression I wanted to give them (and it's not like I walk around every day in a kilt.) At the end of the day I say wear whatever you want. If you like it then that's all that matters!

My father was a bit unsure of it, but the first time I wore it in front of him I was also wearing my MacPherson t-shirt as well (it's of an old ad from his grandfather's pharmacy)...turns out he was wearing his MacPherson shirt that day too. I think it helped remind him of why I wear the kilt.

Live kilted!
Just make sure you have a ready supply of wity repartee for any comments you might receive, and of course equally witty answers to "what are you wearing under that?"
I'm sure your girlfriend will come around once she sees all the attention OTHER women pay to you when you wear a kilt.

It helps if people think you're nuts even before you start wearing a kilt!

It's good to hear you get acceptance for your kilt wearing. The strange thing is that it seems that it is the immediate family who find it difficult to accept the kilt. When you are out and around people think it looks cool.
