"Single Width" Fly Plaid?
I've decided that my first (and possibly only) kilt will be a custom-weave in my family tartan and would like to purchase a fly plaid at the same time. From what I've found, most custom weaves are only single width, which leads to my question...
Would a single-width fly plaid be acceptable?
Most fly-plaids seem to be a double-width square of tartan cloth with a fringe and I'm worried that a single-width plaid wouldn't look right.
If a single-width plaid doesn't work, does anyone know of somebody that does double-width custom weaves?
Thank you!

Well I'll be the first to mention that a fly plaid is hardly required...
But you do have some options. First of all I believe the minimum order to get double width material from Dalgliesh is 16 yards (they may have upped it to 30) four of those yards will go into your kilt and two will make you a nice square plaid. So you could try and find 2-3 others who would want a kilt in the same material.
Failing that I would direct you to talk with Scotweb or Matt Newsome. One of them may be able to get a fly plaid woven to correct dimensions with their contacts.

Let's not forget that all tartan was once upon a time woven "single width", and when one needed a double width piece you simply sewed two pieces together side-to-side. You could easily do the same, and not one person in 10 million would ever notice the seam.

30 yards of double width is the minimum if I am interpreting their price sheet correctly.

I believe one and a half yards will make a square plaid.

There's no way I'd use 30 yards!
I understand a fly plaid isn't necessary, but I know someday I'll wish I had one but the opportunity will have passed.
I'm interested to hear more about sewing two widths together to make a plaid. How often is that done? And what about the seam? I fully intend to make my own after reading various threads about making a fringe and purling, so sewing two sections together is an option if the seam isn't too big a concern.
Thank you for your replies, everyone, I am truly grateful for them!

House of Edgar has recently gone to Single Width on most of their tartans. This poses a problem when needing a fly plaid as well.
What I do is order 3 yards single width and splice the 2 pieces together. It works very well.
