had some fun designing a tartan for....

....my throwing "club" such as it is. The Cardinal Highland Athletics Club..."CHAC". We're not an official Stanford club, it's just that we practice here and most of the participants are/have been Stanford staff, students or alumni. It's been slow during the last two Friday Help Hours, so what the heck...

My first attempt at a Cardinal Highland Athletics tartan:

and the cloth...OK, so Photoshop subtley changes the colors.

Second Revision: Stanford colors are "cardinal" (red).. green for the tree, and white. Adding the gold makes it slightly different from University colors, so avoiding a clash with University licensing, but also representing California..

Here's the rendering of the cloth...

    and the tartan...

    Any thoughts?

The red is "Cherry red" according to Scotwebs color picker, I bet it would be brighter than the images suggest.

I like it Alan. I like the addition of the gold. Are you going to be able to get it made in PV or wool?

Well, since there are only three of us in the CHAC right now, I think the cost would be prohibitive. I already made Summer a kilt...she likes purple anyway, so she's not going to want one.

Getting it made in PV would be hugely expensive, since Marton Mills wants many, many dozens of yards before they will consider it. The logical place to go would be to Fraser and Kirkbright or to Dalgliesh. Fraser and Kirkbright might be able to make a wool/poly blend that would be something like affordable. I supposed I might inquire as to how much it would cost to get Dalgliesh to weave it, as long as I'm sitting down when I get the response!

    But it would be fun!

I see. Yeah, at the cost of a custom weave it wwould be better suited to a tank over a throwing kilt. I'd hate to spend that much to have tar get all over it. Anyway, it's still pretty cool.

Bethany liked the more muted colors so I changed it a little bit...

First one I like, lots. Second one, not so much. Third one doesn't do it for me at all.

    But then, I'm a jewel-tone kinda girl

Personally, I like the second one best. After seeing the "rust" colored version Ms. Bethany said she liked the "cherry red" better. The only issue is the price, which is blistering. Scotweb sez $90- per meter, minimum order 10 meters for 13 ounce wool. $900. From that I could make two five-meter kilts. Ouch.

    Not happening any time soon.
