    Smile Kilt Hanger Opinions

I've been rolling my tank to store it, but am persuaded that kilt hangers might be the better choice, especially as I'm now expecting my second kilt and won't have the shelf space any more.

Looking for your advice on kilt hangers - a lot of them don't look as if they'd support the weight of my 9yd 16oz tank. What's worked for you? What would you advise me to avoid? I'm looking for a supplier that would have something in Ontario, or at least cheap to ship.

Three regular ladies' skirt hangars, the kind with two clips on a straight rod. Each hangar supports one-third of the kilt (pleats, inner apron, outer apron). Steve has a thread on the topic showing how that works if words are not enough.

Update: Yup, Steve provided his link. Two vs. three but the same basic idea.

Please don't go buy hangers for your kilts. Most of those sold as kilt hangers simply don't work any better than what you probably already have in your closet.

You can use almost any hanger designed for pants or skirts. Many department stores throw out their hangers and will let you have all you want for free.

Here is a link to my method of hanging kilts. It was developed after taking down and re-hanging kilts all day long in my shop.

This method will work for any kilt. The one in the tutorial is a full Traditional kilt in 16oz Wool. It weighs in at just under 4 pounds.

I just use a couple regular skirt hangers--the type like sydnie7 described with 2 clamps. When hanging in thirds (as if I were wearing it), I clip the front two pieces--the aprons-- with a single hanger and the back piece with the pleats with the other hanger. Then, just hang with the two hangers.

    Thumbs up

    I've been using these for a couple of years now;

I also use their "kilt kit" travel bag,

I've been very satisfied with both.

I tried Steve's method...it felt a bit lopsided with weight, so I started folding it into thirds just as I wear it and then clip it as Spartan describes...apron and under apron in the clips of one hanger, back pleated portion in the other...that way the weight is relatively even on both hangers and balanced side to side as well. I'll admit to being partial to wood hangers, so I don't use free store plastic hangers, but rather some relatively cheap, yet wide, wood and metal skirt hangers with rubber-tipped metal clips. I bought them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

I am happy with Steve's method. Two inexpensive clamp hangers like for slacks from the department store for each kilt...

A little bit of finesse to get each kilt hanging from two different hangers in a straight organized way, but very doable.

I learned The Steve Ashton Method from KiltedWolfman when I visited him last summer. He showed me his kollection, all neatly hung up in the closet... I remarked how they were stored with perfect, military precision, one identical to the next. He showed me what he had gleaned from Steve, so as soon as I got home I tried it myself -- it truly does work extremely well for most kilts. Even my Utilikilt can (more or less) be stored that way.

What really clinches this method though, is that I can literally walk into ANY hotel in the country and hang up my kilt for the night, as they always seem to have the hangers with clips on them.

    The Steve Ashton Method FTW!!!

Thank you Steve. Yet again your years of experience are of value to us all.

I was in a store last year getting a new pair of swimming trunks and got to talking to the owner of the shop. I'm not sure there was a logical progression in the conversation but I left the store with 3 very cumbersome bundles of this type of hanger held together with elastic bands. I had no idea what to do with them, until now. Thank you.

However, there are so many hangers that I'm afraid I may have to buy more kilts.
