Casual vs. SemiTraditional
So... I need a new kilt. Main reason, I'm starting my training for the highland games. I am planning on participating in the October Seaside Highland games here in California. Also, I'd like a kilt that I can treat more as a knock around kilt, something to wear to the pub and such.
Suggestions? What are the major differences in the two types of kilt? (Besides price) They are both made of 110z. PV... the casual kilt has something called the PermaPleat system. The casual kilt also has the USA logo on it. (I generally don't like things with logo or brand names on them.)

Honestly, I just bought a SWK thrifty for some of the same reasons, maybe buy one of those for 30 and then maybe a 5 yeard or premeire from USA? Food for thought. I havent received my thrifty yet, but the pics and feedback ive gotten on here seem like it is pretty decent for what it cost.

The semi-trad uses a strap-and-buckle fastening system and the casual uses velcro. The semi-trad looks like it may use a bit more fabric, as well.
I have a USAK casual and am very pleased with it. Unless you're a real stickler for detail I doubt you'll notice the lack of straps once you add a belt and sporran.
Also, Rocky will make you a casual with no logo, just ask in your order.

That's good to know cause i realy like the usa kilts, and the logo was a bit off putting, so i ordered from a different retailer, but i think the next kilt will come from usa kilts

Droid,
For Heavy Athletics, you want something that looks fairly decent, is comfortable, not expensive, can take a beating and can last awhile. Given the choices you've posed, my recommendation as a fellow caber thrower is go for the casual. No need for the buckles to get caught up in your weight belt or throwing belt.
I have 'throwing' kilts in Stillwater (Thrifty), Sportkilt and USA Kilts. After a few years my sport kilts get bashed and the pleats get unpressed (that's ok by me if I'm spending a 90 degree day throwing things)--My Stillwater's hold up fairly well, but the fabric doesn't breathe as well. My USA can take the bashing and still look somewhat crisp. USA's can also take the rain a bit better.
Kinda breaks my heart when I get tacky on my USA kilt--with my others, I just roll 'em up and put them back in the bag.
Don't get me wrong, Stillwater's and Sportkilt's are great for the games, but if you're only getting one right now, I'd say go with Rocky's casual. He might even have an 'off the rack' casual that will work for you and save you a few more dollars.
Oh-and yep--he'll let you decide if you want the patch or not.

I'm not so much a stickler for detail as much as a stickler for tartan... The Stillwater kilts have limited options as far as what's available.

Too true, I think this is about the time when someone needs to post that diagram, ya know, the circle one with quality, price, yadda yadda yadda

I'm of the impression that PV is a superior material than acrylic for several reasons, but the stain resistance, reduced flammability, and reduced pilling all take my vote.
In fact, I have plans on getting a pair of kilts from Rocky in the near future, one thrifty and one semi-trad... since he was nice enough to get the tartan I was looking for from MM.
