Increase in interest in the Kilt and traditional Scottish customs
Without discussing the politics involved, I was wondering if people think that there will be an increased interest in wearing the Kilt, highland dancing and other customs in younger people living in Scotland over the next 2 years? In the run up to the referendum I'm sure that Salmond and the SNP will try to instil a feeling of Scottish pride among the people here.
Do you think this will have an effect on those living outside Scotland in any way?
Again, I'm not trying to make this a debate about Scottish independence, just in case the thread is automatically closed.

I think that would be great! The more kilts are worn the better.
I don't know how much more I can stay without making it a little political. ;)

I don't think it will have an effect one way or the other.
I think people interested in the SNP are already interested.
I don't know that their activities will spark any more or less interest over here.

I think the point is to persuade the younger generations who have no real opinion on the matter, and were not planning on voting in the referendum.
If they start seeing an increase in people wearing the kilt, the hope is to make them start thinking about their culture, heritage and nationality.

I meant over here on the other side of the pond.
I think over here that if people don't already know what the SNP is
they'll think it's a new tv show like NCIS SVU

Re: Increase in interest in the Kilt and traditional Scottish customs
There might be an upswing in Scottish Pride but that doesn't necessarily mean that kilt wearing and dancing are going to follow. It's a modern country; I'm sure that they can express their nationalism in contemporary terms...it'd be like trying to revive the tri-cornered hat and knee breeches her in the States as a symbol of a revived nationalism.
(No tea party references on the tri-cornered hat thing, please...)

I agree that it won't likely change minds, but it might be used increasingly as a symbol, and I'd be all for that part of the equation.

Re: Increase in interest in the Kilt and traditional Scottish customs
To the extent that anything gets publicity it is likely to increase interest. There will be copycat kilt-wearers. Some of them will become stuck on it. Others will provide more kilts for us to look at second hand. Our band is seeing a steady stream of interested people show up. It is nearly at a point where we have to look for a new venue for practice.

I think it will hinge upon how many celebrities hop aboard the wagon. Sad, but true.

Re: Increase in interest in the Kilt and traditional Scottish customs
I think only residents of the "old country'' can truly speak to what interests are garnered there but I do tend to think that there might be an uptick in interest among the diaspora however right or wrong that may be. I think some of us have been conditioned reach for the rose colored spectacles where "remembering" where we hail from. I just hope those that still reside in the homeland are patient enough with us to gently dissuade us of false notions and to help us come to a real appreciation of things as they are.
And if a greater appreciation of the kilt is gained all the better.
