What accessories to wear with a multicoloured sporran??

A friend very kindly gifted me a slightly wacky sporran which i'd love to wear but i'm not sure what to wear it with!

It was made with the Stewart and MacDonald tartans on the front(as the family has clan associations with both) and I think it's great but i'm completely stumped on what i might wear with it.

Do you think something quite plain like a solid coloured kilt? I could wear a green jacket to match the gusset of the sporran maybe?

Any suggestions (however outrageous) are very welcome.

With a pair of blue jeans. With a solid-colored kilt. With a very dark tartan.

As much of a peacock as I can be, go with your own gut reaction here. Demonstrative sporran with subdued kilt, visa-versa or there's the last options found in the "Matchy-Matchy" thread.

I believe I would wear it with either a Stewart or MacDonald tartan kilt.

In America, among some well-to-do people, there is a tradition of patchwork for cocktail trousers or jackets, usually in madras, but often in tartan or even gingham or tweed. This look gets parodied a lot, but, believe me, it is real and very popular within its own world. The usual practice is to balance the loud element with a navy blazer.

Trying to match the sporran based on anything other than the front is a waste of time. It is like matching your undershirt to your jacket lining. As pretty as they are, the underside of the flap and the back of the sporran are not visible when you wear it.

As I understand things, you have to see something in order to match it.

That looks like Buchanan, on the inside.

I know I'm setting myself up on this one, but why would they hide the Buchanan on the inside?

Personally I would wear this only with a plain-coloured kilt – woollen, polyviscose or denim. It shouts at all tartans!

RichardG, it is very unique, very cool.. Alot of good advice... So I hope I can add in.. I would wear it with any of the Tartan colors that its made out of or similar..or a dark tartan I have a Dark Shadow Island on Black Tartan it looks solid but its not, it does have a pattern to it.. Good luck, sure no matter what you come up with, it will be great... Angie

I like it, actually. If you wear it with a Stewart, you will emphasize the bottom of the sporran, as the top will blend in - vice versa for the MacDonald. So it will look splendid with either, but draw the eye a bit up or down; worn with almost anything else, the sporran will stand out more on its own. Either way a dark green jacket or shirt would look great.

When I see that sporran it screams "tweed kilt" to me!

Let the sporran do the tartan duty, let the kilt be selfcoloured tweed, or a tweed with a nice large subtle overcheck. But not the same tweed as on the front of the sporran (Lovat green?)

Perhaps a grey, charcoal grey, or Lovat blue.

I just googled Harris Tweed Kilt and this came up, from 21st Century kilts. I can see that kilt with your sporran!
