    tartan or tweed

    I found this very old material is it tartan or tweed ?
    its its not a soft feel wool and looks to be straight from the loom

    I'm sure that more qualified answers will follow, but my understanding is that "tweed" is defined by the use of yarns spun from fibers of varying shades. "Tartan" refers to the pattern of regular, repeating blocks or stripes of color in both the warp and weft of the fabric. Thus, it would appear to be a tartan woven from tweed.

    My vote is for tweed. For the following two reasons: first, it is assymetrical. (I know there are assymetrical tartans, but generally speaking tartans are symmetrical); second, it is a straight weave and therefore doesn't have the distinctive diagonal twill lines.

    My thoughts... how far am I off base, my beloved brethren.

    I'd say neither. This is asymmetric plain weave check pattern comprising plain and mixtured yarn with different warp and weft colours in certain sections.
