    Commonwealth Regiments...

I just found a very moving picture from the Queen Mother's funeral (may light perpetual shine upon her!) showing the various Commonwealth Regiments, including the Toronto Scottish (in back of column in Hodden Grey kilts), the Witswatersrand Rifles (in Douglas Tartan trews) and the Transvaal Scottish (in Murray of Atholl kilts behind them). The lads in the "lemon squeezer" hats with the red bands are "kiwis".

It's great to see the tradition, although such a sad occasion.

    Cheers!

    "smokey bears"

We used to call them "smokey bears" in the Park Service (gee, I wonder why? 8) ), Miah...but, you'll notice that the Kiwi version is much taller than the USMC version, and the RCMP version also is different than the US campaign hat.

    Cheers!

In the RCMP we simply referred to the hat as a stetson. It is definately different than the USMC hat.

    stetson...

The RCMP weren't the only ones to wear the stetson...many of the Canadian mounted units in the Boer War and the First World War wore them...Lord Strathcona's Horse, the Alberta Dragoons...I have a photo in a book of a Prairie Province mounted unit and an RCMP detachment in France in 1915 -- the RCMP are NOT wearing stetsons, ironically, but the other regiment is.

I really like the "Montana Peak" style in a hat -- but I wear one on a regular basis!

    Miah,

This has nothing to do with hats, but I can contain myself no longer!

I HAVE to ask: why, in your Avatar, are you beating the living daylights out of a large Diet Coke?

The only reason I can think of is that it is surely better than drinking it
