Customising a sporran

Has anyone customised a Spooran yet? I have a very boring looking sporran and am thinking about customisation.

I am thinking attaching a nice/Classy patch and 2 lapel pins on the flap.

What do you guys think? Am I nuts to want to do this?

With some of the weird sporrans I've seen on this forum it sound nearly normal to me .....Go for it.

Yes, I think that you are nuts.

As for customizing your sporran, go for it. So far I haven't heard that the dreaded 'Sporran Police" were out and about.

Someone needs to market a sporran with a reversible flap that says "regimental" one on side and "not regimental" on the other.

Most Scottish regiments in the British & Commonwealth forces who wear plain day sporrans have some sort of "sporran" badge; i.e. the Black Watch has a white metal badge of St. Andrew with his cross, etc. I've always thought that it was a sharp thing to do to really make the sporran "stand out".

I think a couple of pins shaped like Chinese dragons would look very cool on your sporran! Or some Chinese characters?
On the other hand, I like your sporran as it is. Plain is not necessarily a bad thing. It tells people nothing about you and makes them curious and a bit wary.

I have customized one purchased day sporran, to make it bigger and more useful. What I did was to separate the front and back by cutting the strip of soft leather (gusset) between them. Then I sewed another strip of soft leather in between them, and put it all back together. Effectively the front and back now have a much wider strip between them. The result is that the sporran opens up much more and will hold a lot more stuff. At the same time it does not look significantly larger--the change is all in the depth.

I am not a real good leatherworker, but this was not too hard. If you look closely at the sporran you can see the mistakes I made. But when I am wearing it few people are likely to get that close a look!
