    Tartan Identification help please

    Hi everyone
Just popping in quickly to see if anyone can help identify this Tartan?
It ‘looks’ a bit like a Buchanan Modern but I’m not entirely sure as the sett is a little different to what I’ve seen online.

    Thanks in Advance

P.S the Kilt was made in Sydney Australia by Wm Christie who from my research was operating in the 1970-80’s in central Sydney

I think I've seen it called Buchanan symmetrical, or something like that. It may also be called Buchanan of Leny.

No, Buchanan of Leny has blue whereas this version appears to use black. An erroneous Trade version IMO.

    Thank you Fiheadair & Tobus
Yes it’s the black that confused me as well.
Shrug ... we may never know?

The adaptations I made for the gentleman are... punk...
Here’s some pictures. Not my thing but he wears it well!

Noted. I will add this variation to the STA Database.

While wasting time on Facebook this evening a post came up from Kilted United. If you’ve seen their posts lately they have been supporting a young boy called Cayden who was being bullied for wearing a kilt.

The current post says he is wearing his Buchanan
I’ve cropped the picture and put it next to the kilt I was enquiring about...
Looks very similar to me allowing for different screen colours and lighting.

Nice work on your part, but he looks like a punk who's wearing him mom's skirt!

The two tartans pictured are different in that the one the young man is wearing is the expected asymmetrical Buchanan pattern. The one you have inquired about is symmetrical and looks very much like the Buchanan Old Sett (or Lenny) but with one of the lines being black instead of white. We have only begun to see the Old Sett appearing recently. We almost never saw it years ago. But now that our new Chief wears a variation of it that will make it even more popular.

    Thanks for the information ctbuchanan
That’s really interesting as the maker Wm Christie of Sydney went out of business in the 1980’s.
From my research he was around from at least the 1950’s until the ‘80s
So someone was weaving the Lenny sett 50-70yrs ago - I wonder who wore it? When? And Why?
I assume the fabric was imported and the kilt constructed in Australia... the plot thickens!

I found a delightful article in the newspaper archives that quotes him in c1957.
I’ll try and link it in the Kilts in the media thread it’s a hoot!
