    Nicoll Brothers Hunting Sporran

After considerable thought, I have decided that my first sporran purchase from Margaret Morrison shall be their
Nicoll Brothers Hunting Sporran in Oxblood.

I really like the traditional look of it.

What I can't determine is how the waist size correlates to the actual total length of the pleated leather strap option.

My newest sporran - from eBay - has a total strap/chain length of 46.5 inches, which is ideal.

So, with my waist of 36-37 inches, how can I be sure that MM sends me a leather strap of the length I need?

A beautiful choice. Not sure how to plan for the strap.

Will this be your first sporran ever or just your first MM one? If you have a strap that fits now you can just switch it from one to the other. That’s what I do.

    Well chosen...

When ordering, simply tell them your usual waist size, and they will send a strap of the appropriate length. Sporran straps are worn so that they hang loose from waist level in the small of your back (not tight around the hips) and they have several inches of adjustment (a number of holes) for fastening the buckle in the desired place.

    If in doubt, ask them.

Margaret Morrison is a family-run firm, and they are usually quick to respond and are very helpful and obliging - and are happy to accomodate individual needs. You may even speak to the one who will actually make the strap.

A good technique for finding the exact length of strap for yourself, is to hang the sporran at the usual height from a tailor's (dressmaker's) tape-measure, and note the measurement given. You can then give this measurement to MM as the place to mark the middle adjustment hole on the strap - the holes either side are useful for if the strap shrinks or stretches between wearings.

    That's a beautiful sporran! Well-chosen indeed.

That style appears, both with studs (16) and without (17) in this 1936 Andersons catalogue.

These Andersons sporrans could well be by Nicoll Brothers, who had been in business for nearly a century at that time.

And here, in colour, in this 1938 Rowans catalogue.

About your sporran strap, perhaps tell MM the total length of the one you have that fits.

In any case it's always better to have a strap too big than too small. You can always cut them down to size.

We ordered a batch of plain leather band sporrans from MM. WE asked for uncut and unholed straps and a band member finished them after we measured everyone.
