penannular brooch

Has anybody ever used a penannular brooch for a kilt pin? I love the principle of the design and have fallen in love with the Raven Penannular Brooch

but I'm afraid the circle will rotate around the pin and fall off. The brooch is awfully pricey, so it'd hurt to have it disappear on me.

Yes, the larger Rams Horn penannular is really nice, too. It doesn't cost quite so much, which helps a bit, and the pin is a real pin which won't chew up fabric so much as the Raven Penannular will.

#1. How large is it?

#2. How big of a hole is it going to make in the cloth?

There's a choice of stones. I'm afraid that pin is going to dig a pretty good-sized hole, huh?. I might have to use the brooch for a fly plaid, which isn't something I'll wear very often.

I've gotta tell you, Alan - I wouldn't do it.

There will be a gaping hole in your kilt. It seems your fear of losing the brooch would be well-founded, too.

I much prefer the ones that use a modern clasp just because the true broach leaves such a huge hole.

Alan, I put a elastic hair band around the pin once it goes through the first hole. It is hidden from the front and I don't have to worry about losing my pin anymore.Try it it works.
