I finally did it!

Well guys, I finally did it. I wore my kilt to my new job today. I must say, it went over very well indeed. From my supervisor, "You da man!" I got "the question" from several women. One young lady threw her mirror down at my feet. Total strangers would say "Nice outfit!" as I walked down the hall. One lady said, "Come here and sit beside me so I can look at your legs!" There were some who had historical and genealogical interest. I started there 10/31 but I met more people today than I have in all the previous weeks combined. They'll remember "that guy in the kilt" from now on. It did raise a question though....if I were a woman and men made some of the comments I heard today to me, they would've been subject to disciplinary action. Not that I minded! The attention was nice and I'll certainly do it again but it certainly allowed me to walk in someone else's skirt. Merry Christmas everyone!

All that attention is somewhat addicting. Once people get used to the kilt and no one notices any more, it's a little disappointing.

It's kind of funny tho - first you dread the comments, then you miss them.

This is true, but we men have not had to endure the centuries of sexual discrimination, sexual harrasment, and mistreatment that women had to. For this, we tend to take it more in stride where as women still have to be on the defensive. Given that many women in the world (yes even Europe and North America) still make less wages than their male conterparts and are still treated differently, they maybe feel more of a need to prove themselves. Men have the advantage of just rolling with the punches. For fun, go with your wife, girlfriend, or female friend next time they are looking to buy a car or property. Watch who the sales may speaks directly too and who he is condesending to. It's too bad really.

Bear in mind this is just my opinion and no disrespect to either gender is meant.

Back On topic, glad to hear the kilt was well received at your new workplace.

I realized when I put that picture in there that no one else was around! We had had a "food day" and I remained after I punched out to collect all the stuff I brought. This job is new for me. I've never had a "desk job" in my life and it's pretty restrictive. I had just taken the "Code of Conduct" training the day before and they were very adament about having no knives, even in your car so I thought it would be best not to include the sgian dubh. The funny thing is, they provide you with supplies, one of which is a metal letter opener that's twice as large as my little knife and just as sharp! I stuck it in my sock for a while just to make the "point." I only have two kilts right now so I won't be wearing them every day but I have intentions of getting a new kilt made in the new "Fitzsimmons" tartan as soon as I can afford it. I thoroughly enjoyed wearing my kilt to work and look forward to many more kilted days.

Don't know if this is helpful or not. I sit all day at work too. As much as I love my tartan kilts I've gravitated to Utilikilts, Freedom Kilts, and AmeriKilts for work...and Pittsburgh Kilts too, just Jeff's on hiatus (or however you spell it)

Anyway, my drill is to wear a UK to work, come home at night (I work weird hours), run the kilt through the washer on gentle cold cycle while I eat, then hang it up to dry overnight. By the next night its dry and I'm washing another kilt that I wore that day.

For me, Utilikilts are knockaround kilts, don't have to worry about ruining a traditional, don't have to wear a sporran. The only reason I wash them at the end of the day is to get out the wrinkles from a day of sitting.

I particularly like the Mocker for office wear, has a cleaner look and the pockets are where I'm used to having pockets from my years in pants. The Survival with the cargo pockets unsnapped also presents a similar clean look.

A solid color kilt is a lot like a pair of pants in that there are a lot more things that go with it than with a tartan kilt.

If you're interested I have pics in my gallery of what I've been wearing to work the last few weeks. Some is a bit mismatched, but other stuff works. Fun to experiment.
