Which "ish" ?
Here in Mid-Mich most folks dont think of 'Scottish'. They ask if you're Irish.
Which 'ish' do they think of where you are?

Scottish up here in da UP. There were quite a few Irish that settled up here back in the day, so most people seem to know the difference.

Although there are a lot of Scots in the area I live, most people think I'm Irish. This was also the case when I lived in Florida. It seems to most people that the kilt is an Irish thing. When I'm asked, I politely reply that yes, I'm Irish, but the kilt is Scottish, and I also have Scottish heritage.

Oh I get the Irish thing all the time. It surprises me too since North Carolina is supposed to have a heavy Scottish background. I guess it has to do with how our culture is shaped by mass/pop-media. I'm never insulted by it. Anything Celtic is grand!

There are a lot of Scots, too, so on the whole I think people up here know the difference, eh?
In fact, a lot of the manpower that built St. Peter's Cathedral downtown were Scotsmen that came over for the job and stayed, if local tradition is right. Which I think could be pretty easily found out at the Historical Society.

With me it has always been the 'Scottish' link. It has never once been suggested that I might be Irish, in spite of my many plain coloured kilts. In fact, almost without exception, when I begin to tell enquirers about Irish, Welsh, Cornish, Breton, etc. tartans and kilts (or cilts!), they simply do not believe me! No, only the Scots wear kilts is the belief in these parts!
