    New Stillwater 2006 Irish National

After my disapointment with the Kiltstore Black kilt (again I say it wasn't their fault) I drowned my sorrows by ordering a Stillwater, 2006 Standard in Irish National. I have to say, this is one great kilt. I'm already planning on a Stillwater heavyweight in their black shadow tartan as soon as it becomes available. Oh yes, I placed my order early Monday morning and had it yesterday afternoon, great service.

PLease forgive cutting off the feet, I was just trying on the kilt and was wearing my slippers instead of proper hose and shoes.

Anyone have an opinion as to the black shirt and either black or off white kilthose with this kilt. The only flashes I have are an antique red, a dark navy and a black set. I'm afraid I am a bit challanged when it comes to color combinations.

    Jerry,

Alas I am no fashion maven like Ham, but I do like the look.

Glad you like it. I've had my 2006 Irish National for about a week now. Will be wearing it to our local Irish Pub (Paddy Malone's) either tomorrow or Saturday. Suspect they will give me a free Paddy Malone's T-shirt for wearing it. Will have dinner there plus a pint or two.

Stillwater kilts has to be one of the best deals around. Not a taylor made, but suprisingly good fit, good quality, and great service.

Looks good. Personally I would say go for the black hose. I find that with a black dress shirt and a brighter kilt that the black hose bring the balance back to the outfit where as the lighter colour hose do not. As for flashes, try and see if you can find a swatch or two or the Irish national and make matching flashes (it's really quite simple). If you can't find a swatch, try two colour flashes with the lighter green and maybe a yellow in grosgrain ribbon. I am sure if you do a search in the forum the instructions for making flashes will come back up.

It would sure make a smart looking ensemble.

You look great. I'm not one with a good fashion sense myself, but that outfit looks fine to me! Now I've got another "want" to add to the list. Thanks for the photo!

    Jerry,

That is a fine looking kilt - I know nothing of Stillwater's products personally - and the black shirt works well with it. As for hose: we on this side of the pond tend to think of dark hose as being somewhat formal (the only time I wear black hose casually is folded/rolled down with black boots when wearing one of my black fabric or leather kilts), but I think you could get away with black hose if dressing semi-formally. Light coloured hose with that shirt will make you look top heavy! As a general rule, I try to get the shirt and hose of roughly, if not identically, the same colour - it's not a good idea to try to match hose with the kilt unless you have tartan hose for very formal wear.

Flashes? Red is not the best idea. There are plenty of green ones available from the many on-line traditional kiltmakers, but Colin makes the best suggestion - track down a swatch of the Irish National tartan, some inch-wide elastic, and make your own. My Scottish kiltmakers usually provide them when making the kilts but, otherwise, I make my own.

Just a word about the 'Freelander': it looks to me as though you are wearing it uncomfortably low, but I am delighted to see that you have it on a strap and not a kilt-ruining chain. I'd raise it by a couple of notches if I were you.

There are no Irish tartans in my 'Kollection' but you've started me thinking....!

Ham, thanks for the kind words and the advice. Actually, the sporran isn't a freedlander (I wish it was). It is a relatively inexpensive locally made sporran which I picked up at the Williamsburg Scottish festival. Oh, it is a bit too low I need to dig out my leather punch and add a few holes in the strap. After I find the right hole, I can then trim the strap so there isn't excessive length past the buckle.

Collin I agree about the black hose. I were my Irish National with a black polo, black hose, and Irish National flashes. Those flashes with the bright green sure look good against those black hose. I've also tried it with oatmeal and cream hose, but they do not look as good as the black (in my opinion).
