How low/high to wear a sporran

First Post. Nice to be here.

I decided to order a kilt etc. for my soon to be upcoming 30th b-day. (scary) I have never worn a kilt before but decided to take the plunge as I've always wanted one but never had the money. However, I am finally done with school and have a job.

The sporran I ordered arrived today. I've moved the sporran in a few different positions but nothing seems "better" than anything else. I was wondering if anyone has some rough guidelines on how far down to hang your sporran. Thanks.

First off, welcome. With a traditional kilt I wear it a hand width below the top. When I'm wearing a belt it's a finger width or two below the belt.

You're done with school and have a job? How did you manage that? Could you please tell my son how you did it?

Welcome to the forum...you don't have to be crazy to post here but it helps.

I wear mine roughly over Mr. Happy. Any lower and it look weird, any higher and it look weird. I haven't experienced any discomfort issues, either.

    Welcome!

I have more than a couple books that state it should be aprox one hand width below the belt. Now without a belt, or with a high waist... hmmmm.

Wear it high enough so it doesn't bounce on your thighs as you walk.

Welcome to the forum, from another fish person (Pices). What day is your birthday? Mine is next Tuesday, the 28th. I tend to wear my sporran too low. I still need to add a couple of holes and shorten the strap

Welcome to the board. I try to wear mine about a palm's breadth (not the full hand) below the belt. That's the way I learned and how I think it looks best. Of course, personal preference is a consideration.

There are a couple of posts here that suggest you "loose" the chain strap, if you have one. I don't want you to be confused by the misspelling. Do not "loose" the strap, as in making it looser, but "lose" the strap, as in get rid of it.

We're pretty much all in agreement, here, that chain straps are only for formal wear, and that we should wear all-leather straps with our sporrans for anything less.

Post some pictures when you get your ensemble together.

Welcome cinnabar, hope you enjoy this finest of forums!

I wear mine in such a position as to easily get my hand into it. After all, the sporran is a supremely practical item, you don't want to be bowing down or lifting the arm, go for comfort!

    who is Mr Happy??

Welcome from another relative newcomer. I thought you might be a geneticist, as cinnabar is the name of a fruit fly mutant strain.

I posted this picture (http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=15945) a few days ago and received several comments that it looked too low. It is one hand breadth below the belt, and doesn't flop about when I walk. Ultimately the decision is up to the wearer, and comfort is the key.

And Graham, Mr. Happy has been known to sport a blue ribbon!
