    Viking in Kilt!

    Hello everyone!

I've been interested in kilts for most of my life, but I haven't really done a lot about it. I own one kilt, but the fact that it doesn't have any pockets hasn't allowed me to put it to much use.

I wasn't aware of the contemporary type kilts until recently, but after discovering them I've been desiring to get my first kilt.
The fact that I've also read that the kilt was actually brought to Scotland by the vikings (althought propably in a quite different form) hasn't dissuaded me from the idea.

I'm looking to buy a denim UnionKilt both because they look nice, and because it's located in EU

Cheers everyone! (with a good mead or a Laphroaig preferably!)

Welcome to the forum! I hate to jump in with a correction first thing, but I'm afraid the kilt was not brought to Scotland by the Vikings (nor the Irish, nor by any of the other groups that try to claim credit). It developed quite naturally within the Highlands of Scotland.

Here's an article I wrote on the origins and development of the kilt:

    All the best!

Thanks for the welcome each and all!

Surely! It is written in the black speach of Mordor, and it means something to the effect of Fire Spirit. Don't put anything much more into it, than the fact that I'm a great Tolkien fan!

I may have expressed myself too vaguely. I didn't intend to say that the kilt as we know it in Scotland originated from Scandinavia. But I have read several places, that it was propably influenced by the vikings manner of dress, and the name is old norse as well.
The dress the Vikings wore was undoubtably different from what the scots wear now, but I still think I can use a kilt to honour my own lineage, even though it's propably very different from how it was.

A very hearty welcome to/from a fellow Scandinavian!

Yepp, the origin of the word "kilt" is Old Norse as in the verb "kilt(r)e", meaning "to fold".

I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay here - and don't worry too much about becoming addicted...

    Welcome,

Whatever the kilt deal really was, for sure your Vikings brought Viking blood to a lot of Island Scot families...including mine.

Welcome from Canton, OH., a drinking town with a football problem, and a growing rabble of kilties!
My wife is Scandanavian as well (nearly 100% Norwiegan) and if they didn't inspire the kilt, at least they still gave me her!
As others have said, welcome to the addiction, and happy kilting!
