Well, I did it: Adult School
I jut pitched a proposal to the local adult school to offer a class next year (January or possibly February) on making a kilt. I pitched them
"Make a Contemporary Kilt"....where they'd be making X-Kilts
and
"Make a Scottish Kilt"....where they'd be making two-buckle tartan kilts pleated to stripe from poly-vis or poly-wool. If this class flies I'll have to write another guide on how to make a 5 yard quick-and-easy tartan kilt. I guess I need to make one or two to develop the method, huh? I'll also have to find a local supplier of the material in at least 4-5 tartans.
The Contemporary Kilt class would meet three times from 7:00 - 9:30. The tartan kilt class would meet four times from 7:00 - 9:30. I have no idea what I'd charge, but probably about $35.
Classes would be given at the local High School, in the Home Ec. room which apparently has 18 sewing machines.
Fingers crossed for me on this, I think it would be a lot of fun!

too bad I live on the opposite coast of the US. That would be well worth the cost of admission, though I've already made several hand-stitched and am working on several simultaniously (as well as off-days making balmorals/tams).
Good Luck!!!

Alan,
What college will this be at (if its not too personal to ask)? I recently learned to sew (the new school I'm teaching theatre design at does not have a staff person to do sewing for the scenery department so I learned). I had always wanted a kilt, and made 2 for myself so far. I was just making up patterns, and I have material for another one if I have the time.
I'd love to actually take a class in it! And I live in CA so there is a chance its close by
Cheers
Chris

As he lives in/near San Francisco, I'll take a leap  and assume it is near there.

Too bad I am too far from you, I would have signed up. $35 is one hell of a bargain.

I'd like to just find a good sewing class nearby. Need some basic skills before I'm ready to go for the real thing.

That's great Alan, I hope it flies and returns on a migratory run. Keep us updated. I've got a monthly sewing meeting group now with a bunch of beautiful ladies. I just like showing up and drinking tea and seeing how they do things. I already learned how to make bias tapes (Flashes to us)much easier than I had been doing them. O'Neille

Alan, that sounds like fun (I love teaching), and a real bargain for the people taking the class. It will be interesteing to see how many people sign up.

I'll bet you get plenty of folks who want to sign-up. Think about setting a maximum cap for the class to get the student/teacher ratio you think will work best for all. That way, when you hit the cap - you can suggest additional sections be taught later in the year.
