Importance of waist sizes in Utilikilts
How important is the waist size in a UK? Specifically if it's one size larger than I usually wear, will it be that noticable either by myself or by someone looking at me ?

I normally wear a size 34 pants, and wear a 36 UK. that is what I've seen to be generally the right proportion, unless you are a bit more substantial, then you might need something a little larger, but probably not more than two or so sizes larger than your pants (if you wear them)

Kilted Bill,
It is always good advice to never use what you think your size is from one garment to determine sizing for another.
For example, Never send a kiltmaker your trouser size!!!!!!
I would suggest you go to the UK website and measure yourself the way they ask you to. UK's are designed to fit more like baggy cargo shorts than a strapped on kilt.

I wear the kilt because: Swish + Swagger = Swoon.

Clarification...
I understand the difference between trouser size and kilt size.
Allow me to rephrase: I now wear a size 34 UK. Could I wear a size 35 UK without it feeling baggy or otherwise too oversized for me, and/or would someone looking at it be able to determine that I'm wearing one size larger than I should be?

my first UK was an Original at 41 inches. but i wear jeans of 36 or 38. but i measured and re-measured and RE-measured. i kept getting 41". so i thought OK, it must be right. well, as it turns out, 41" was too big, but not by much. It bunches up regardless of the "floating" waist closure. i just ordered my 2nd UK. Also an Original (this one has the snaps at the waist). This time i got a 40". It fits perfect. It is amazing the difference one inch makes.

is it one of the older "floating" waistbands or one of the new waistbands with snaps? I think the former would be more forgiving of an extra inch of fabric...

with a belt, it shouldn't be a problem. without a belt, I'm not sure, as I only have one UK.

I wear a 36 pant and 36 trad kilt. I have a 37 UK mocker and it's fine. I can wear it either up a bit higher with a belt or down on my hips. no one but me knows the diff.

I have a UK workman's 30 that is a perfect fit. I also have both a denim and a mocker in 31. And both of them start to bunch up around my waist when I buckle them adequately to hold them up. This compromises both comfort and appearance to some degree. In my experience there is just about zero adjustability in a UK. Stick with what fits, I say.
I've kilt for less.

I'd say the mocker and original are a little more forgiving due to the weight of the fabric. The bunching of a too large waist would make me hesitant to buy an over-sized workman or denim.
Best regards,
Jake
