Jacobite and/or Culloden
Does anyone have a kilt made from either the Jacobite tartan or one of the Culloden tartans?
Robert and Chrystel are gong to be making me a lovely French Box Pleat kilt and I thought these might be nice choices. The French supported the Jacobites and I am a Stewart so that makes sense. Also I had ancestors that may have fought at Culloden (in other words they were there at the right time) and of course the French Regulars were there as well. I've seen the digital swatches of the tartans and they don't exactly excite me but I was hoping maybe someone had a kilt from one of them. Basically I'm hoping they look better used in a kilt than the small section of the digital swatch looks.

Hail Caledonia!
Hi Chef!
I don't think you'd be especially happy with a Jacobite tartan kilt-- it just doesn't look very nice. Rather than Culloden tartan (seems to be a lot of that about) have you considered having your kilt made up in Caledonia tartan? (And no, it's not the tartan of Clan McBrayne! ).
Yours Aye,
Scott

Chef,
You might wish to peruse this article by noted Tartan expert Peter MacDonald:

I would think the original colours would make an outstanding box-pleated kilt.
Cheers,
Todd

I think that the "weathered" color of the jacket's tartan would be phenomenal...but I'm getting partial to the weathered tartans.

Scott,
Thanks. I'm familiar with the tartan but I'm guessing you know more about its history than I do. Is there a specific French connection?
Maybe Clan MacBrayne should adopt it and paint all the ferries in that colour scheme..or may be not.

Caledonia Tartan was popular in the 18th century, and it has been suggested that it was worn as a protest to the Union of Parliaments in 1707 (and probably featured in the 1709/1714 Jacobite risings). There is also a school of thought that it was worn by members of the ill-fated Darien Company.
Given its antiquity (300 years) I rather like it as a general "Scottish" tartan.

If this works - 2007 Troy Kilt Kamp, the far kilt is the Jacobite tartan.

I have the original, full-size picture if you're interested, but it will have to wait until I'm back in Grand Island and have access to hi-speed internet again (using dial-up this weekend).
