DA tartans

I am looking to get another kilt and have noticed that in Gunn Modern there's two variants - Gunn Modern and Gunn Modern DA. On looking at the samples, the latter just seems a darker version. Is this the meaning of DA or is there something more to it?

I would assume if you were looking at two samples, each labelled "Gunn modern" and the one marked "DA" was just a bit darker than the other, that the "DA" would stand for "dark." But it would be great to have more information. What is the mill weaving the cloth, for instance?

Well, looking at the two samples it certainly does look like one is woven in darker colors than the other, so I'd assume "DA" here means "dark."

I've asked that question of the mill before ("what does the DA mean?") from the nice lady that answers the phone and she didn't really know. Next time I speak to the weaver, I'll ask him.

Could it be that the mill got a darker color batch than it had anticipated and went ahead with the weaving, only designating the result as DA?

Marton Mills also produce three versions of Black Watch in P/V, two in 13oz. and one in 16oz. Wool.
The three in P/V are labeled ES, M, and G.T. It seems to have something to do with the size of the Sett as the ES is very small. Probably used for Ties. The M is a medium size and the G.T. is larger.
The 13oz Wool are labeled Modern & DA. The DA appears to be a weathered version and is a small Sett than the Modern.

I have come to the conclusion that ES stands for Especially Small.
M stands for Measly
G.T. stands for Grossly Threaded

And I have become convinced that DA stands for Distinctly Annoying.
