Lord Lovat standing in front of his estate.

This must be the Lovat who is said to have lead his commandos on D-Day while being piped into battle.

That is correct, Simon Fraser himself.
And he DID land on Sword beach with his piper, against specific orders not to do so.
On a side note, I do mix my plaid shirts with my kilts and the look is fantastic I have to say.

Would he be in line of descent from the chief who raised the Lovat Scouts, which saw commando service in the Boer War?

I may not have this right, but wasn't it Simon Fraser, 15 th Lord Lovat (and Mac Shimi) that Winston Churchill was referring to when he said something like "the mildest-mannered man who ever scuttled ship or cut throat"? He does look like a movie star, though!
