    Baby-sized Balmoral

So I made a Balmoral for my 8 month old daughter out of some recycled black twill from some of her Daddy's old beat up Carharts. I think it looks cute.

An easy enough project, it took about 20 minutes, most of which were occupied by making the pom-pom (I had never made one).

    Update

So since several people have been pming me to ask about it, here's my pattern.

I decided at the last minute to off-center the hole so there would be a more pronounced tilt. I think it would look good either way though. I didn't put on the cockade, I might do that at some other point. I didn't include the ribbons at the back in my pattern draft. For a baby or toddler this is a potential choking hazard. I suppose if you really want them, they would be okay for a 5+ child.

I used 1/2 inch black polar fleece blanket binding for the headband. This is both soft and stretchy.

The pattern is for a 6-9 month old, but can easily be adapted. Just find something round to trace around that has the approximate diameter of your child's head (try a cereal bowl). That would be the hole, then multiply by 2 to get the diameter of the top and bottom circles. You may want to add another inch or two depending on how floppy you want the hat. When in doubt, err on the side of bigger for these large circles (I used a mixing bowl to trace).

My pictures are still being stupid today. Here's the link:

OK, so now I have to make one for my grandson to wear with his new kilt and sporran at the St. Patrick's Day parade in March.

Great photo of a very nice looking young lady.

(My granddaughter spent the last parade trying to drink up my Guinness. She was 10 months old.)

    LOL Oh dear.

My daughter thinks that if I'm eating/drinking she has to have some too. (She just swiped my chocolate truffle cookie a couple minutes ago) And Daddy's Mountain Dew is never safe.

Ah, the joy of children! Since my youngest just turned, 41, my youngest Grand child 8, I have to either borrow some, or wait for my 23 year old Grandson to figure something out.

What I really was going to add here, is that the size of the hat/cap is determined by measuring the head, dividing by pi (3 1/7) The resulting diameter is the hat size, expressed in inches and eighths. Then one can figure how much "overhang" you may want. If I had the wee-one, I'd be turning them out by the dozens! BTW Hobby Lobby crafts usually carries a nice selection of pom-poms (toories) ranging from 1/2" (13 mm) to nearly 2" (50 mm), and in various colours.

    Love the outfit!
