Dirk and Sgian Dubh Presentation Box

Today I finished my latest Presentation Box. It was a new challenge for me, as it needed to hold both a sgian dubh and a dirk.

The wood is reclaimed white oak from an old house I dismantled on the family farm with accents of Irish bog oak for the mitered keys, the inlay in the lid, and the escutcheon. The hinges are extruded brass (Brusso). The lining is green suede cloth (real suede can tarnish silver, in case you didn't know that). The inlay in the lid was provided by Rab Gordon; it matches the brass disc used for the pommel of the dirk.

This will be my fifth box designed to hold a Rab Gordon sgian dubh. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out.

I did blog the whole process, so I won't repeat it all here. If you want to read more about it, you can start here. There are seven entries total, each beginning with "The Rusling Box..." all in April, so you'll want to begin with the first one and work your way backwards.

The person receiving the box said he would provide me with pictures of the box with the sgian dubh and the dirk in it. I will post them at that time.

    Cheers,

    Ethan

Very excellent work! Sweet wood cannot be beat, can it? I especially like old wood, such as what you recycled from the house. How about PMing me if you are interested in making small boxes, about 4.5 in square, 1-1.5 in deep.

    Gorgeous!

Very cool how you used the reclaimed wood from the old house.

Looks great! I'm a big fan of contrasting wood accents and really like the look of the miter keys.

    table

ehiker, did you also craft the table upon which this fine box rests? Very nice work indeed, from someone who knows.

    Ethan,

That is a very nice way to reclaim old wood.

I have been thinking about something special to give myself in honor of my twenty plus years of military service in the U.S. Army and I originally thought a good bottle of twenty year old whisky but thought that was not appropriate because that is not something that would outlive me or truly represent my faithful service. I then thought that a special commemorative sgian dubh from Rab Gordon would last a lifetime and could be engraved with something like served from 1989 through 2009 etc..

I would gladly pay you to construct a special presentation box for my sgian dubh.
