Jacket and sporran
I have a piping gig tomorrow for an Irish family. I'd really like to wear my brown sporran with a harp tooled into the flap. Can I wear this brown sporran (with brown belt and shoes) with a black argyle jacket? Or should I wear my (not-as-well-fitting) brown tweed conversion jacket?

I guess it depends on what the occasion is guy! Is it cas, or an event. I kinda go by the edict that, as a piper on a gig, we are always suppossed to be at at least semi-dress. That's just my opinion thugh. I would go with the brown Argyll if you have the option. Ask your clients if they have a preference.

Put it together and try it on. You'll know at first glance if it looks right or not.

Greg why not post photos? As an aside the piper at my twin bothers wedding wore tweed and brown leathers and looked great.

I would say the decision is yours alone. No real rule there. As George7 said put it on and look it over. You will be able to see if it fills the bill.

If you're asking, I'd say go with the tweed. Black and brown would look odd, IMHO.
I have brown leather for my sporran, belt, shoes etc which means I have to wear a green Argyll jacket, even on formal occasions. A black PC would look decidedly not right, in the same way that black leather accoutrements don't look right with my Hunting Fraser kilt.
Mind, the Argyll cost a small fortune so I'll be damned if I'm not going to get the wear out of it!

I don't think the colour of your jacket matters so much so long as you match all your leathers. Brown sporran and black shoes (and vice versa) is better avoided I think. Best idea is from George, try both by doing a mirror check before you go out. You'll know which works best that way.

If you look at a number of photos of HRH the Duke of Rothesay, you'll see that he frequently wears a brown sporran with black brogues. I rather like the look.

And you also see this in photos of the various Scottish regiments over the years as well. They always wore their issue black brogues but various dress for some would include brown leather sporrans. Offhand, I don't recall about their belts but seem to recall them usually being black. Years ago when I was playing with a pipe band, we did this same thing with various dress modes, always maintaining black shoes and our black belts, even with a brown sporran with the daywear green Argyll jacket. At the time I never questioned it but think it looked fine.
I must confess that over the years of playing solo I've gotten stuck in the mode of matching all of my leather (shoes, sporran and belt). Primarily brown for daywear/casual and black for evening or a more formal setting, like a wedding. This may be more because of our fashion sense of matching shoes and belts with "regular" clothes than anything else, IDK.
Most pictures of Prince Charles I have seen show him wearing a waistcoat with Argyll jacket, obviating the belt. Otherwise I can only recall him wearing a sweater without a visible belt.
