First Kilt, Xkilt in Navy Blue Twill

Well, it took a while, but it's done. I had downloaded Alan's Xkilt instructions a while ago, thought about it for a while, then finally got started. As I am not Scottish, I decided to go with a solid color first time. The instructions, along with the additional information posted here in the forums, made it easy work. It was not technically hard, but it took time. After I got it all done, I tried it on, and decided a few adjustments were necessary. The under apron was too wide, wrapping part way around my hip. I trimmed and re-hemmed the under apron so that it finishes where the over apron starts. The over apron was also trimmed to sit even with the first pleat. I added two small belt straps as well.

I have yet to get my sporran, and some proper hose, but all in due time. I found the belt (1.5") at Walmart of all places after searching local stores high and low for something suitable. This is a casual kilt after all.

    Anyhow, to the pictures:

I wore it today when I went to pick up my wife from work, her fellow employees kept asking her how hard it was to make. She kept smiling and proudly declaring that I was the one who made it. One co-worker asked me to spin around, then asked me to spin faster.... cheeky monkey was trying to catch a glimpse.

Good first try! Keep on working.

Did you stitched the edge of pleats? I can't see from the photos.

That is great! Thanks for the pics. I really want to make my own but I'm kind of intimidated by the thought.

Both the over and under folds of the pleats are stitched, just to help keep them in place. I've heard that cotton twill has a tendency to lose it's crease. As well, I kindof like the way it looks for a casual kilt.

Very nice job! I always allow a few extra inches for both aprons...you can bob them back but you can't easily add inches if they're too short!

Looks great! I like the buckles and straps. Have you got any detail photos of them?

David--who's several weeks into his second x-kilt. Anyone figure out how to create more hours in the day yet?
