    Being photographed

Do you people always let anybody that wants to take a photo of you when you're kilted?

I'm beginning to politely refuse. I mean with all these internets and so called "social networks" (facebook, twitter etc) you never know where your photo is going to end up, do you?

    What do you all think?

Quite often you don't get the option to say no and often you don't even know it has happened.

The other thing is, if you are not doing anything illegal, immoral or fattening, why would there be a problem?

    Regards

Ah well - it is the price of celebrity, you know. Some people do use the modern technology as a weapon - one of my neighbours broke up with her boyfriend and had to ask all her friends not to upload photos with her in as he went through all their information and would come around to the house shouting and yelling if he saw something he did not like.I'm just waiting to notice people using such things as alibies in detective programs.I might be a bit blase about my image - for a long time I have been appearing at folk clubs and events and getting my photo taken is something I only just notice these days. I was interviewed for the TV once too - but that was a long time ago. Just a few times people have recognised me from a photo, but nothing unpleasant has ever happened in 40 years of exposure to the camera lens. Anne the Pleater :ootd:

Like Anne I've had numerous encounters with the camera over the years (some by choice - some not), most back in my wild & wooly days of the 1980's when I ran with the Heavy Metal / Biker crowd on the west coast. I've appeared on tv more than once back in the day (once for an hour long show out of Seattle with my mates from the band Metal Church), others in photos. The best was back in my outlaw biker days, I was all decked out in my grubbiest "best", and as I passed a large group of Japanese tourists, all of them started taking pictures of me. I distinctly heard one say in broken English "American outlaw".

Though lifestyle & wardrobe (mostly) has changed, I figure any photos taken now can't be any worse than those floating around from the "good ol' days".

I would imagine I still appear in a number of photo albums from folks, both foreign and domestic, that visited the National Battlefield where I worked as a park ranger and living history interpreter. I know for certain that a photo of myself with two Moldovan Army officers is out there somewhere -- the two officers were part of a staff ride from the local Army Base which has a number of foreign officers attending various training schools.

True....in my response (above) I was thinking of those candid moments one has no control of. As to posed, or being asked, if I'm not in the mood then I have no problem saying no...

Yeah, as you well know Todd, (having myself been a reenactor/living historian) dealing with the "paparazzi" is an occupational hazard!

Yeah, been there! One time I was gassing up in Artesia New Mexico on my way to Ruidoso, and a tour bus full of Japanese tourists rolled up. My bike and I posed for like 20 photos with them!

You know, I was just thinking that while many strangers have photos of me, and I'm usually behind the camera taking them myself, I posses very few photos of myself from over the years (this includes those taken by family).

Not sure why that is, but seems kind of strange??

Likewise I have never had any unpleasant consequences from being photographed. In fact quite a number of times I have been approached by people who said they recognised me from the internet, and struck up pleasant conversations, not only here in Scotland but also while I have been on holiday (vacation) in North America. As an ambassador for the kilt I feel that I should always show willing to be photographed.

For 5 years I made my living busking ( U.S. trans = panhandling? ). Photographed many times daily. Rarely did anyone ask for permission, but most put something in the bowl. Some thought a smile was enough. Others seemed to believe they had the right to record anyone dressed unusally. I just try to accept that in this world there are the good, the bad and the ugly.Try to stay closer to the good.
