Belts
Could somebody please let me know of a dealer that supplies quality kilt belts. I have 2 belts from SWK and while they certainly do the job, I'm not too fond of the way one side of the buckle rides up higher than the other side. Also, I've seen pics of some guys wearing buckles that fasten like a trouser belt, and I rather like the look of that.
Thanks and regards!

Re: Belts
The Scottish Tartans Museum should be able to fix you up. And for a REALLY nice (read: the best I've seen) belt, ask if Ferguson Britt (that makes the sporrans for the STM) would be willing to make you a belt.

When you say "one side of the buckle rides up higher than the other side", do you mean it sticks out further from your kilt? Or actually rides up higher (in elevation)?
That's one thing that bothers me about every kilt belt buckle I've tried. They never lay evenly. The side with the bar always sticks out further than the side with the hook, making it look lopsided when I look down at it. I know it's not noticeable from a distance, but it bothers me.

Re: Belts
I stopped using waist plate buckles after I purchased 2 kilt belts from Mojo Leather (a black and a brown). They have double prong buckles and are very comfortable to wear.
Look for the Hunter belt, here's the link http://www.mojoleather.com/sporran-kilt-belts

I've never worn a "waist plate buckle" belt, as I understand they're really for "dressy" occasions and I've never gone further up that scale than tweed jacket & waistcoat, sans belt.
That said, I also have two of the "Hunter" double-prong buckle belts from Mojo Leather, one black and one dark brown, and they're the only belts I wear these days. Great quality, including rounded & burnished edges to reduce wear on the fabric of your kilt.

I suppose it really depends on the belt and buckle as to how 'dressy' it is. If wearing a waistcoat, I agree that a belt is not needed (and would just cause undue bulk under the waistcoat anyway). But for those of us in warmer climates who can't wear waistcoats or jackets most of the year, wearing a kilt sans belt looks a bit 'naked' (to me, anyway). The belt really does help with visual proportions.
So I prefer to wear a kilt belt in the 2-1/2" to 2-3/4" width range, with a waistplate that doesn't look like a dressy model (i.e. non-shiny, and non-square). This is actually my go-to belt for casual daywear:

A buckle that fits that size belt, but with a tongue-bar (or whatever you prefer to call it) like Steve showed above works great too. I've seen some plain rectangular brass models that work very well, although I can't recall who makes them. They're usually sold with a standard kilt belt with an embossed Celtic knot style pattern.

Re: Belts
I always recommend the Tandy Leather Factory.

They have belt blanks; you can choose the buckle you want; you can choose the colour or colours you want; you can choose the finish or design you want. When it is done it is unique and it is yours.
They do different sizes. You can swap buckles as often as you wish. If you look in the Scottish Country Dancing thread the belt and the sporran strap where both made by my own hand.
Believe me - if it were difficult, I couldn't do it! But I did
And the price is half or less than any where else.

It sticks out further from the kilt on one side. I find I can get both sides to lay flat, but I REALLY have to cinch it down and then, of course, I can't breathe. Or eat. Or drink as much beer as I'd like...

Isn't that the 'Velcro' making it stand out?
