    Smile My first Burn's night

Since the time I'm a non scott kilt wearer I wanted to participate to a Burn's night and see by myseft the ritual associated with it.

That was a very enjoyable night in downtown Montreal and tasted with great pleasure the famous haggis. The taste remindeded me the stuffing we put in turkey for the holidays with fatty texture in the mouth.

To my great surprise I saw a guest next to my table with his kilt put backward and not aware of it.

Would have been advisable to warn him politely in private of the situation or let more experienced people doing this delicate job ?

    Re: My first Burn's night

Well, I always wondered if it was maybe us with the kilt on backwards. Makes sense to sit on the flat part so as not to crease the pleats. Wearing it "backwards" seems comon sense.

The other kiltie in my little town is confined to one of those electric chairs that zip around town. He's wears his kilt "backwards" for that reason - common sense. Difficult for him to sweep the pleats with his disability. He's a grizzled old vet too so I ain't gonna be the one to point out that he's got it on backwards. He sees how I wear my kilts and then makes his choices.

Just sayin' "backwards" solves a lot of pleat problems and makes sense.

    Re: My first Burn's night

In the past when I encountered this situation, I would discretely inform the person that they might wish to turn their kilt around. Almost always the response has been "Are you sure?" To which I respond " Just look about the room."
Later in the evening I'm almost always rewarded with a thumbs up, or similar gesture.

I always feel uncomfortable telling someone they're dressed improperly, but I have no compunction telling a person what a complete mess they are.

I like to tell gents that they are backwards.

Ron: Nice story. I generally prefer function over form, so maybe I'll start wearing my kilt backwards.
