An Interesting Feature on a Kilt
I was looking at a photo of a man attending the recent Royal Caledonian Ball in London, and noticed an odd feature: on the front of his kilt are two cloth belt loops through which the chains of his sporran strap were placed. Has anyone ever seen this before?

Huh... well, I suppose that's one way to keep the sporran from sliding down, although I have to say, like yourself, I've never seen that before.

Rocky's Casuals have this feature, and I think it is brilliant for this exact reason. For certain body types, it keeps the sporran hanging where it should.

That's brilliant! I'd kinda like to have that done to one of my kilts.

Unlike the typical sporran chain straps normally found at the rear, which support no vertical load caused by the weight of the sporran, I would wonder how these front-mounted straps will fair with a loaded sporran, over time. All the vertical load of a loaded sporran is borne by these loops. The nature of the stress is clear, in the photo.

Two of my Sport Kilts have 5 belt loops 3 in the back and two in the front. Yes nice for the sporran.

Ummm...them things on Rocky's casuals are belt loops - as I suspect these are too. Looks like he just ran the sporran chain through the belt loops.....creative....

Comment deleted. Others already made the same observations. Sorry.

I have put actual beltloops on my kilts since day one. I often tell my customers who are 'Gentlemen of Substance to put their sporran chain or strap through the loops on the aprons. This gives a much more vertical hang to the sporran. Similar to sporran hangers.
I have never seen my beltloops distort like these though. I suspect they are not actually beltloops but additional sporran loops similar to those found on the back of some kilts.
On some traditional kilts I have seen the wearer pull the black hanging loops out from inside the kilt and pass their sporran chain through them to achieve the same effect. With much the same distortion effect.

I just slip my sporran strap/chain over the leather strap/waistline buckles on either side of the kilt, to bear the vertical load. The leather waist straps/buckles are far stronger than small cloth belt-loops for supporting such a load, and they keep the sporran strap/chain from riding too low on the front of the kilt.
If the cloth straps in the photo are intended as "belt loops", I would think they are either 2 inches too low for that purpose (based on the height of the belt in the photo), or the kilt is being worn much too low, or the belt is being worn much too high. ::confused::
